Forest Akers Golf Courses ranks as one of the best collegiate facilities in the country.
Michigan State University's Forest Akers Golf Courses offers two 18-hole championship layouts, a state of the art practice facility referred to as the Golf Center, two full-service Golf shops, and a full compliment of services.
Forest Akers Golf Courses are recognized as two of the best public golf course in Michigan. Golf Digest has given Forest Akers West Course a four star rating and the East Course a three star rating. The Detroit News ranked Forest Akers West Course number six in the state of Michigan's public courses. And the Lansing State Journal gave Forest Akers West Course first place in their Best of the Best rankings for the past two years.
The West Course was redesigned by Michigan State alumnus Arthur Hills in 1992. Renovations include extending the length of the course to over 7,000 yards, new bent grass greens, 18 new bent grass tees, new rye fairway grass, and all new bunkers.
The East Course was redesigned in 1997 in changing from par 71 to par 72. Numerous trees and bunkers were also added. The most extensive improvement was the addition of the new Golf Center.
The Golf Center is mid-Michigan's premier practice facility. The 20 acre practice area opened in 1997 and was rated as one of the top ten new ranges in the U.S. The center is open to the public with memberships available to fit any budget. The center features a three acre bentgrass practice tee, two separate teaching tees, practice bunkers, target greens, color coded yardage markers, and a 20,000 square foot putting green.
The Golf Center has professionally trained staff of PGA teaching professionals equipped with state of the art teaching equipment such as the Astar Digital Video Analysis system.Opening in 1999 is the new Short Game Range. This facility has two large target greens and practice bunkers that will sharpen the stroke saving skills of any golfer.
